Health is a social, economic, and political issue, and above all, a fundamental human right. Inequality, poverty, exploitation, oppression, violence, and injustice are the root causes of poor health and the premature deaths of marginalized people.

We live in a society that fosters illness. In Europe, 2.7 million people die each year due to just four industries: tobacco, ultra-processed food, fossil fuels, and alcohol. Every day, at least 7,000 people die in our region due to these products. Large corporations hinder regulations that could protect public health and target vulnerable people with misleading marketing, exacerbating disease and inequality.

Recently, we read that the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport plans to cut 250 million euros in funding for prevention, healthcare internships, and care for the uninsured. These cuts affect people in the most vulnerable positions. Previously, the government announced cuts in education, culture, and the arts—sectors that make us human, shape us, and provide us with tools to think critically. Meanwhile, fossil fuel subsidies and investments in the (Israeli) arms trade continue. It is clear: our politicians value financial profit over human lives. It’s time to stand up.

The Gezondheidszaak/PHM-NL believes that things must and can be different. We advocate for a caring society and health for all—a society where everyone breathes clean air, has financial security, a roof overhead, and access to quality healthcare and education. In short: a society where everyone has the freedom to choose health and realize their full potential in life.

We ask you to stand up, join in, and resist the harsh neoliberal and racist winds sweeping through our country. Let’s join hands, amplify our voices, and collectively bring about the necessary change.

To make this vision a reality, we warmly invite you to an inspiring conference on Saturday, January 25, 2025. We will gather health organizations and activists from all over the Netherlands. This day will be dedicated to shaping a caring society and ensuring health for everyone.
